UAE Corporate Tax Registration: Process and Common Pitfalls

All insights

Registering for UAE Corporate Tax is mandatory for virtually every company operating in the country — mainland or free zone — regardless of revenue or profit. The process is free and handled entirely online through the Federal Tax Authority’s EmaraTax portal, but small errors can lead to delays or an AED 10,000 late-registration penalty.

Who Must Register?

All resident juridical persons (LLCs, free-zone companies, branches, etc.) must obtain a Corporate Tax Registration Number. Free-zone entities expecting the 0% Qualifying Free Zone Person rate still need to register and file returns.

Natural persons (sole proprietors or freelancers) only register once their business turnover exceeds AED 1 million in a calendar year.

Registration Deadlines

  • Companies incorporated on or after 1 March 2024 must register within three months of incorporation.
  • Older companies had staggered deadlines throughout 2024 that have now passed. If you missed yours, register immediately.
  • Natural persons who cross the AED 1 million threshold must register by 31 March of the following year.

Step-by-Step Registration on EmaraTax

  1. Create or log in to your EmaraTax account at tax.gov.ae (UAE Pass is the easiest method).
  2. From the dashboard, create a new Taxable Person profile if one does not already exist.
  3. Open the Taxable Person account and select the three-dot Action menu under Corporate Tax → Register.
  4. Enter accurate entity details (legal name, trade licence number, financial year end, activities, ownership).
  5. Upload the required documents and submit.

Required documents (PDF format, maximum 15 MB each):

  • Trade licence (including any branch licences)
  • Certificate of Incorporation or Memorandum of Association
  • Commercial registration certificate
  • Emirates ID and passport copies of owners holding more than 25% and of the authorised signatory
  • Proof of authorisation for the signatory

The FTA aims to process complete applications within 20 business days. Once approved, you receive your Corporate Tax Registration Number by email.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

Assuming exemption

Many free-zone companies and loss-making businesses wrongly believe registration is optional. It is not. Registration is separate from paying tax.

Confusing VAT and Corporate Tax numbers

Your existing VAT TRN does not cover Corporate Tax. You need a separate Corporate Tax Registration Number.

Mismatched or incomplete details

Entering a trade-licence number, company name or financial year that does not exactly match official records is the most frequent cause of rejection or clarification requests.

Poor-quality or missing documents

Blurry scans, expired licences, or missing ownership IDs slow the process. Compress large files if needed and double-check every upload.

Missing the three-month window for new companies

New entities often focus on setup formalities and overlook the tight registration deadline.

Submitting without a final review

EmaraTax does not auto-save partial forms. Always review the summary screen carefully before clicking submit.

Final Tip

Registration is free and takes most businesses about 25 minutes once documents are ready. Completing it early avoids the AED 10,000 penalty and positions your company for smooth annual filings (due nine months after financial year-end).

If your application is complex — multiple licences, foreign ownership, or free-zone substance questions — professional support can prevent costly errors and keep you fully compliant.
